Information about our Japanese Kumamoto Reds
The Kumamoto strain originates from the extreme southern island of Kyushu, in the prefecture of Kumamoto, Japan, and are the only free grazing cattle of that country. They graze around the sacred volcano of Mt Aso where the herd is limited to a population of less than 60,000 head.
Kumamoto cattle produce a carcase quality and consistency superior to all other breeds. Kumamoto Wagyu naturally contain enhanced marbling throughout which results in an intense buttery flavour as well as juiciness and extreme tenderness. The marbling contains a higher percentage of monounsaturated fat than any other beef breeed and is recognized for its health benefits.
At Mazda Wagyu Stud, we aim to produce genetics which will enhance Bos Indicus and Bos Tauris breeds, the infusion of which will result in more efficient food utilization and higher growth rates, fertility and milking ability.
Mazda Wagyu Stud has the largest herd of Kumamoto Reds in the southern hemisphere comprising over 130 females, enabling us to source from a broad genetic pool. Over the years, we have endeavored to breed a data base from our proven sires which provides to our clients an extensive selection of bloodlines. We have exported to countries which have introduced programs of cross breeding to enhance their local cattle production. Performance data is used to select sires in the production of semen and embryos to ensure optimum results for our overseas clients.

Mazda Wagyu Stud has introduced a program of crossing Sahiwal with Kumamoto Red Wagyu, this being most suited to tropical areas wishing to breed a dairy beef animal.
